The Season X Defensive Player of the Year — five-flat on the measure to RickJames323496’s four-and-a-half, the closest race for a gold on the ballot, and he won it doing exactly what the award describes: taking the ball away, night after night. First Team All-Defense at the top of that board, Second Team All-Association, the Most Improved silver for a fifteen-game stretch at 22.8 PRF and 10–5, and the small forward on the Dream Team — nobody left the ballot with a fuller cabinet. Seven steals in Game 140 and six the very next night, 24 on 10-of-13 with seven dunks in Game 197 to close the ballot. His teams win: 84–67, +1.8 a game with him on the floor, 7th of 32. He is third all-time in rebounds and second in steals, with 3.2 dunks a night and a 28-and-10 in Game 104. The sheet has one giant lever: three or more steals-and-blocks and his teams are 54–25; under three, 30–42 — when he is disruptive, they win, full stop. Honest part: 76% of his touches end in his own shot for 3.2 assists, so the offense doesn't run through him and shouldn't, and there are quiet nights (38% under 20 PRF) where you forget he's out there. On a good team that is fine. He is the guy that makes it a good team.
